Her work turned intimate experience, language and Galicia’s social conflicts into literature of universal reach.

Rosalía de Castro was born in Santiago de Compostela in 1837 and developed her career at a time when Galician was regaining a public and literary presence. The publication of Cantares gallegos in 1863 became a landmark of the Rexurdimento, but her output was much broader: she wrote poetry in Galician and Spanish, novels, short prose and journalism.

In Follas novas, published in 1880, her poetry combines a powerful inward dimension with attention to emigration, poverty, displacement and women’s condition. Her lyric voice repeatedly moves between personal and collective experience, one reason her work continues to invite new readings.

En las orillas del Sar, published in 1884, continued in Spanish a poetry shaped by loss, memory, uncertainty and self-awareness. After her death in Padrón in 1885, reception gradually transformed Rosalía into a cultural symbol of Galicia; yet her present importance goes well beyond symbolism and rests equally on the formal and intellectual complexity of her writing.
