Queixumes dos pinos is the book in which Pondal most fully organises his mythical landscape, poetic language and heroic idea of Galicia.
Published in A Coruña in 1886, Queixumes dos pinos gathers and reworks much of Eduardo Pondal’s earlier lyric production alongside numerous new texts. It is not simply a collection of poems: the book constructs a recurring network of landscapes, heroes, bards, place names and references to the past.
Bergantiños and the Costa da Morte become a literary territory populated by an idealised Celtic memory. The language seeks solemnity and epic elevation, deliberately moving away from purely local-colour writing. This operation explains both the book’s importance and critical debates around its ideological system.
Among the texts connected with Pondal’s poetic tradition is Os Pinos, which, set to music by Pascual Veiga, became linked to the Galician anthem. Later reception made the book central to the formation of modern cultural symbols of Galicia.
Landscape turned into myth
Rivers, mountains and specific places are reimagined as settings for heroic memory.
The bard and the community
The poet appears as a voice charged with remembering, announcing and mobilising a community.
The politics of language
The book culminates Pondal’s conscious choice to make Galician the main vehicle for learned and ambitious poetry.
