The Museo Carlos Maside was created to repair a historical rupture: to recover artists and works of Galician renewal that war, exile and oblivion had pushed out of public memory.
The Carlos Maside Museum of Contemporary Art was one of the first major projects of the Laboratorio de Formas. It opened provisionally in 1970 at O Castro de Samoedo with the aim of preserving and making visible the generation of artists who had renewed Galician art before the Civil War.
The museum takes its name from Carlos Maside and places Castelao among the starting points of the renewal movement. Its collections brought together artists of the 1930s, exiled figures and later generations, making the institution a narrative of continuity rather than simply a picture gallery.
In 1982 the museum moved into its permanent building designed by Andrés Fernández-Albalat and organised through hexagonal modules. Architecture, collection and cultural programme thus form part of the same project of recovering and transmitting artistic memory.
Against forgetting
The collection was born to restore to public history artists interrupted by war, exile and dictatorship.
A museum within a system
The museum is linked to the factory, publishing house, Laboratorio de Formas and the architecture of O Castro.
Collection and continuity
The institution does not stop with the 1930s renovators: later generations are included to reconstruct a longer history of modern Galician art.
