Balbino’s voice turned Memorias dun neno labrego into a literary mirror of rural childhood, poverty and inequality in twentieth-century Galicia.

Memorias dun neno labrego appeared in Buenos Aires around the turn of 1960–61, within the intense publishing culture of Galician emigration. Its narrator is Balbino, a village boy writing in the first person about family, school, work, fear, friendship and the hierarchies structuring rural life.

The power of the book comes from apparent simplicity. Balbino observes the world from a subordinate position but constantly thinks, compares and questions. His viewpoint makes class relations, violence, emigration and lack of opportunity visible without turning the narrative into a treatise.

The book achieved exceptional circulation and was read by generations of readers inside and outside Galicia. Surviving correspondence between Neira Vilas and Luís Seoane documents both their relationship around the first edition and the author’s own surprise at how strongly readers identified with Balbino’s experience.
