Cunqueiro turned oral tradition, mythology, history, humour and fantasy into one of the most recognisable narrative languages in twentieth-century Galician literature.
Álvaro Cunqueiro was born in Mondoñedo in 1911. The town, its oral traditions and the rural and ecclesiastical world around it became a permanent reserve of stories, characters and ways of speaking. He began publishing very young and participated in the poetic avant-garde of the 1930s with books such as Mar ao norde.
After the war he developed a highly diverse bilingual body of work. From the 1950s, titles such as Merlín e familia, As crónicas do Sochantre, O incerto señor don Hamlet and Si o vello Sinbad volvese ás illas made visible a poetics of recreation: familiar characters and myths return in new settings, transformed by imagination and narrative voice.
Journalism was equally essential. He worked at Faro de Vigo, which he directed from 1964 to 1970, and turned columns, chronicles and essays into an extension of his literary universe. Gastronomy, travel and local history also form part of this vision in which popular culture and erudition coexist without rigid boundaries.
Imagination as method
Fantasy functions not as escape but as a way of reorganising history, memory and experience.
Oral tradition and erudition
Legends, popular speech, classical mythology and European literature coexist within the same narrative voice.
Journalism and everyday life
The press allowed him to turn gastronomy, travel, local characters and curiosities into literary material.
