The Real Academia Galega institutionalised a decisive part of the cultural project begun in the Rexurdimento: studying, standardising, defending and projecting Galician language and literature.
The Academy was constituted in 1905 and formally inaugurated in A Coruña on 30 September 1906. The initiative connected two worlds: the intellectual continuity of the Rexurdimento around Manuel Murguía and the financial and organisational support of Galician emigrants in Cuba.
The Asociación Iniciadora e Protectora da Academia Galega, created in Havana, was decisive in financing and promoting the new institution. Among its early goals was to give unity to the language through grammar and dictionary, anticipating the Academy’s later normative role.
Across the twentieth century the RAG became a reference point for philological study, language codification, documentary heritage and literary memory. The annual organisation of the Día das Letras Galegas is one of its best-known public expressions.
From revival to institution
The Academy turns a cultural movement into a durable institution with historical continuity.
Galicia and the diaspora
The foundation cannot be understood without the support of the Galician community in Havana.
Language, archive and memory
Language standards, research and documentary heritage are inseparable parts of its activity.
