Betanzos, A Coruña

Municipality and city in the province of A Coruña, head of the Betanzos comarca. It was a town created by King Alfonso IX, who in 1219 accepted the transfer of the population of Betanzos O Vello to the site of Castro de Untia. In the late Middle Ages it grew through trade in fish, wine and its ovens, and important noble families and guilds settled there.
