Aires da miña terra turns poetry into a public voice of protest and made Curros one of the most popular and contested authors of the Rexurdimento.
Published in 1880, Aires da miña terra brings together poems in which Manuel Curros Enríquez combines lyricism, satire, social protest and religious criticism. The book speaks of a concrete Galicia: poverty, emigration, abuses of power and inequality appear alongside more personal or celebratory poems.
Its appearance generated immediate conflict. A complaint promoted by the bishop of Ourense brought Curros before the courts over poems considered offensive to religion. The episode helped turn the book into a symbol of intellectual freedom and made its civic dimension still more visible.
Its popular reception was enormous, and successive editions consolidated Curros’s position among the major Galician voices of the nineteenth century. Its power lies not only in protest, but also in narrative effectiveness, direct language and the ability to turn specific scenes into conflicts of wider significance.
Social protest
Poverty, emigration and inequality appear as collective problems rather than inevitable fate.
Conflict with authority
The legal proceedings around the book became a key episode in the relationship between literature, religion and freedom of expression.
A direct language
Curros seeks clarity, effectiveness and contact with a broad public without abandoning poetic craft.
